Maya had learned to move through the house softly, not because anyone ordered silence, but because suspicion had a sound and she knew how quickly it could turn toward her. Tara rarely said unwanted directly.
She used smaller weapons: a narrowed look, a question asked like a verdict, a sigh when Maya entered the room. Marcus wanted to believe patience could blend a family.
He made coffee, fixed loose cabinet handles, remembered school forms, and told himself time would teach Tara and Maya how to share a home. The missing fifty dollars taught him something sharper: time does not heal what adults keep repeating.
Tara’s accusation did not arrive alone. It carried every earlier moment when Maya had been treated as the obvious answer to any inconvenience.
A misplaced receipt became her fault. A broken cup became her carelessness.
